While your ear deformity may not be a health concern, it can give your ears an unnatural shape that you dislike. There are a number of ear deformities that exist. It is also known as ‘prominent ear’, ‘bat ear correction’, ‘pin back otoplasty' or ‘set back otoplasty’. In this procedure, the large ears or the ears that protrude too far from the head are pinned back. This procedure can greatly enhance a person's appearance and self-esteem. Genetics and trauma can both cause the ears to become deformed.
Most cosmetic ear surgery patients are children between the ages of four and fourteen. It is also an excellent option for adults who have large, protruding ears or stretched earlobes.
Procedure
Anaesthesia: For adults, local anaesthesia or sedation is preferred. In children, general anaesthesia is preferred, as children are less likely to remain still during the procedure.
Inpatient/Outpatient Procedure
It is usually an outpatient procedure, that is, the patient can go home the same day.
After the surgery, a large bandage is put around your head to promote proper healing and prevent anything from disturbing your ears. The bandage is usually removed a week later, dressing done and a headband is recommended to be worn for a few weeks.
Adult patients can typically resume their normal routines a few days after their procedure.
Children generally require a week of rest before going back to school.
Any strenuous activities or contact sports can be resumed after 6 to 8 weeks.
