Arm Shaping(Arm lift, Arm Reduction, Batwing correction)
The arm shaping procedure is one that consistently yields a high level of patient satisfaction and happiness. An arm shaping is also known as Brachioplasty. It is designed to remove saggy skin and excess fat in the upper arm that droops down, creating a "batwing". Removing these tissues allows for a leaner contour that is more proportionate with the rest of the arm. It is commonly requested by men and women who have lost a great deal of weight, on their own or following bariatric surgery.
Candidacy
- Disproportionately larger upper arms
- Underarm flab can occur in adults of all ages, even young and generally fit people
- Women who do not want arms that appear muscular or masculine. A heavy, bulky arm gives the appearance of obesity, a thinner arm helps to give the appearance of a thinner body
- Anterior and posterior axillary fat pads can be removed
Benefits of Arm Shaping
- Improve a disproportionate appearance of the arm, while maintaining the quality of female beauty
- Allows the patient to feel more comfortable and less self-conscious when wearing a sleeveless blouse
- Achieve a thinner appearance of the arms when they are in a relaxed, dependent position alongside the torso
- It is commonly requested for correcting:
- Fatty/Bulky Arms: This is usually because of excess fat and is best treated by liposculpture.
- Arms with sagging/loose skin folds: This is usually an issue in:
- The older age group
- Those who have lost significant weight
- This is best treated by arm reduction.
Procedure
One of three is recommended:
Arm shaping by Liposuction
Arm Reduction
Combination of Liposuction and Arm Reduction
Arm Shaping by Liposuction (Arm Lipo)
Anaesthesia: Local anaesthesia + sedation or general anaesthesia
Duration of procedure: About 1-2 hours
Incision: A tiny cannula is inserted into the skin. The fat underneath is melted, dissolved, and removed via suction; then the skin is strapped with tape or a garment.
Hanging Skin:
By doing liposuction almost around the entire arm, the weight of fat on the skin is eliminated and normal skin contraction due to its elasticity results in a dramatic improvement.
Anterior Axillary Fat Pads:
These are located on the chest just in front of the arm-pit. These fat pads become more prominent with age and with increasing degrees of obesity. Even in some relatively thin women, the anterior axillary fat pad can be disproportionately large.
Posterior Axillary Fat Pads:
These are located just behind the arm-pit on the side of the back. In some women, these fat pads can be a cosmetic problem. It is often convenient to do liposuction of the posterior axillary fat pads at the same time as liposuction of the arms.
Arm Shaping
Inpatient/Outpatient Procedure
It is usually an outpatient procedure, that is, the patient can go home the same day.
It is necessary to wear a pressure garment for 2 – 3 weeks
Long lasting especially if the activity level and weight is maintained.
- Facial Liposuction/Double Chin Correction
- Breast Augmentation
- Liposuction of the tummy, hips and the flanks
Arm Reduction
In this procedure, the arm is shaped by removing the excess flabby skin.
Anaesthesia: Local anaesthesia + sedation or general anaesthesia
Duration of the procedure: 1-2 hours
Incision: The excess flabby skin is removed from the inner aspect of the arm as a longitudinal ellipse. The resultant scar thus lies in the hidden surface of the arm.
Arm Reduction
Inpatient/Outpatient Procedure
It is usually an outpatient procedure, that is, the patient can go home the same day.
- Takes 3-4 weeks
- Supporting garment is helpful
Permanent unless you gain significant weight
